Peridot - The Golden Stone

The correct pronunciation of Peridot is either pear-a-doe or per-i-dot. Dictionaries say both are correct. Peridot is also called Chrysolite, and in Greek Chrysolite means "golden stone." Chrysolite does occur naturally in a golden color. Lime, yellowish green, olive green or medium dark green are the more common hues of Peridot.

Peridot is also called Olivine. Gem-quality olivine is a mineral that makes up a lot of the earth's mantle (the layer below the crust). Deposits of Peridot have been found in Australia, Brazil, China, Egypt, Burma, Pakistan, Norway, Arizona, Colorado, Hawaii, and New Mexico, and is sometimes found in meteorites. Peridot is mentioned in the Old Testament of the Bible under the name Chrysolite. And, according to legend, Peridot was one of Cleopatra's favorite gemstones, and some of the "emeralds" Cleopatra wore were actually Peridot.

During the Middle Ages, people wore peridot in hopes of gaining foresight and finding divine inspiration. According to some legends, pirates of old wore peridot to protect them from evil. In 70 AD Pliny mentioned deposits of peridot on Saint John's Island in the Red Sea, and fine gem-stone quality peridot is still mined there today after more than 3500 years.  Peridot has been valued for its healing and mystical powers through the centuries. According to ancient beliefs that have passed from generation to generation, peridot should be carried or worn for general healing purposes. Peridot increases strength and physical ability while protecting against nervousness. It's said that Peridot protects the lungs, sinuses and wrists. Peridot helps dreams become reality and attracts love as well as wealth. It's supposed to calm anger, dispel negative feelings and promote sleep.

Peridot is the birthstone of August. In the Zodiac it's the sign of Libra, and peridot is also the gem of the 16th wedding anniversary.
