Amazonite - The Hope Stone
By BethDHedrick
There's some question as to how the name of the stone we know as amazonite came to be. Some say that it's named after the Amazon River in Brazil (although no amazonite has ever been found there), while others say that the stone is named after the fierce Amazons (a tribe ruled by women) that existed during the Bronze Age.
Amazonite is an interesting gem stone with roots as far back as four thousand years ago in India, Egypt, Sudan and Mesopotamia. An amazonite ring was found in the tomb of King Tutankhamen. The seventh chapter of the ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead was engraved on Amazonite, and the breastplate of Moses' third stone is believed to be Amazonite as well.
It's believed by some that if you sleep with amazonite, it will bring clarity through dreams. Amazonite is the stone that you want to touch during times of confusion or transition. Amazonite is also called the "Stone of Truth," and it's said that if you experience visions, dreams or intuitions while touching amazonite, you should believe them to be true. You should trust them and act on them….or so "they" say. Amazonite has been found in the United States, Brazil, Zimbabwe, Russia, Australia and Namibia. The colors of amazonite can vary from green to blue-green. It's semi-opaque. It's said that amazonite will calm the emotions and soothe frayed nerves. Amazonite is also said to enhance creativity and make expressing oneself easier. But maybe the greatest of Amazonite metaphysical powers is its ability to make married life happier.
Amazonite is often called the "Hope Stone" because it's said to inspire confidence and hope for better things to come. And.....it's also said to be helpful in getting lazy teenagers up and moving! Johan Gottschalk Wallerius, a Swedish chemist and mineralogist, named this gemstone in 1747.
